11 NOVEMBER 2005—
1. Subject and use unit
This document details the elements that allow identification of 5283 aluminium alloy (AA5283) cylinders manufactured by Société Métallurgique de Gerzat.
Other names of the 5283 alloy:
- AG5
- AG5MO7
This document concerns gas cylinders for compressed or liquified gases. It does not deal with acetylene cylinders. 2. History
Société Métallurgique de Gerzat has manufactured cylinders using 5283 (AG5) aluminium alloy since 1960 following various design regulations.
3. Markings allowing the identification of a SMG cylinder (all alloys)
The cylinders have one of either stamped markings:
- SMGERZAT
- SMG
4. Cylinders in 5283 alloy manufactured before 05.01.1977
The cylinders markings do not mention the alloy. The base of the 5283-alloy cylinders has specific stamp markings.
Cylinders having feet (mainly fire extinguisher bodies):
These cylinders have two bosses on the base, as per the following diagram:

5. Cylinders manufactured after 05/01/1977
The cylinder marking mentions the type of alloy: AG5 or 5283
| Between 05/01/1977 and 05/01/1981 |
AG5 |
| From 05/01/1981 |
5283 |
6. Steel-wire hoop-wrapped cylinders
All the steel-wire hoop-wrapped cylinders have a liner made of 5283 alloy. As for the standard cylinders, before January 5th 1977, the cylinder markings do not mention the alloy type.
